The XL185S arrived for 1979 as the successor to the XL175, with a slightly larger 180 cc overhead-cam single, CDI ignition and a five-speed gearbox. It kept a simple twin-shock chassis with drum brakes and a 21-inch front wheel. The engine later formed the basis of the XR200 trail bike.
